Painting Workshop in the Keys!

By admin May 20th, 2010, under Creative Wanderings

John Heinrichs will be in the Florida Keys beginning June 12.  He will be available for several painting workshops instructing techniques which will allow the artist to continue painting the types of tropical scenes prevalent in the Keys!  It is also an opportunity to learn how to paint in oils in a nontoxic manner.  This presents a safe environment for children, pets, and others who would be allergic or sensitive to the thinners and painting mediums which contain toxic materials.  Featured paints will be the nontoxic oil paints from Alexander Art.  Space is limited to a maximum of 3 artists for each workshop and the schedule will be somewhat impromptu.  Cost is $75.00 per person, per workshop, which includes all paints, brush cleaners, mediums, use of brushes, canvas, use of easel and disposable items like paper towels and paper palette.  If you are interested in this unique experience, contact John using the Contact Page to receive further information.

The view from the easel…….

By admin February 4th, 2010, under Studio Window

I once heard a story about several older gentlemen who were in a critcal care unit in a hospital.  Only one had a view out the lone window.  To help his fellow patients, the one with the view began describing such great views out the window.  The trees flowing in the wind, the flowers as they were budding, people meeting and having fun.  The descriptions were very detailed and delivered in an exciting manner.

One day, the fellow with the view passed and now the others in the room had no brightness through their day as no one had a view and there was no words of the outer world.  Finally one of the remaining gents asked if he could be moved to the window spot.  The answer was “yes” and he was shifted to the view.  With anticipation the gent peered out the window only to be greated by a view of another drab hospital wing.  You see, the view was from the mind of one who cared about his friends and who always saw beauty in all he surveyed.

An artist should develop the “eye” for beauty when none is present.  Its a matter of viewing things differently from the easel.

Using Creativity to Paint

By admin January 4th, 2010, under Creative Wanderings

Inspiration for a painting can come from a single point or source, but it can also come from several sources which are melded into a new creation.  Such was the case in a recent painting entitled, “Monochromatic Seas.”  The basic color palette and basic layout came from an artist’s painting from 20 years ago.  Lowell Speers, a Master Artist for Alexander Art, painted a similar seascape which he called, “Monochromatic Seascape.”  As an Alexander Certified Instructor, I can use the works of these older Masters in my workshops and for my own use in developing new works.  In this case, I used somewhat the background Lowell had originally painted.  However,  I parted company with Lowell on the foreground.  To me, the original scene needed some action, some movement, something that spoke of life.  So I drew on my own experience as a Seascape Artist and painted my wave in the foreground.  The result is a new experience.  This is just an example of how different resources can be used to make a new scene.
